Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition that can be a huge challenge for anyone, especially those who love to work. At times, it disrupts productivity, seems like it prevents you from reaching your full potential, and can even become a financial burden. In this article, we are explaining some of the entrepreneurial challenges for those with type 1 diabetes and offer advice on how to overcome them!

What are the challenges of running a business with type 1 diabetes?

A business owner with diabetes faces many challenges that are unique to their condition. The main challenges are in the areas of time and money. Managing time is difficult because you must have time to work on your business, manage your health, and other aspects of your life.

Managing money may be difficult because you may have to deal with the limitations of type 1 diabetes and the unpredictable nature of the illness.

Although this can be a challenge for any business owner, it can be especially difficult for a business owner with type 1 diabetes.

Colleen is sharing her personal success story with managing a bursting-at-the-seams life AND type 1 diabetes. Many T1Ds feel restricted by the condition and most do not know another T1D in real life.

The emotional roller coaster that type 1 diabetes experience

Colleen shares with us in this week's episode how many people with type 1 diabetes struggle with depression and anxiety.

The emotional roller coaster they experience can sometimes make it difficult to function day-to-day. However, these emotions may not always be as bad as they seem. They can also be a great source of motivation to succeed in business. Those who succeed in business with type 1 diabetes have a lot of reasons for doing so, but the key reason is that they are able to find a new outlook on life by managing their thoughts.

Tips for succeeding in business as a type 1 diabetic

One of the biggest challenges with Type 1 diabetes is the fact that the disease requires constant monitoring and insulin therapy. In order to succeed in your business, it is important to determine the best way to manage your diabetes.

Some suggestions include:

  • Creating an action plan that will help you take care of your diabetes.
  • Making sure that you have a good support system.
  • Making sure that you have time for yourself.
  • Being honest about your limitations.
  • Being as proactive as possible about your diabetes.
  • Avoiding stress as much as possible.
  • Maintaining a positive attitude.

If you can relate or have T1D, she’s here to let you know they are not alone, and that you can still lead both in your own life and in business, even with type 1 diabetes.  Colleen shares how everyone should be aware of the signs of diabetes. If you have type 1 diabetes, be sure to have your blood sugar checked often. You should also make sure that you have a healthy diet and exercise regularly. If you stick to these guidelines, you should be able to succeed in business.
